MUIZENBERG, WC - Civic organisations have raised concerns over the slow pace by Limpopo's Basic Education Department in eradicating pit latrine toilets in public schools.

The Department missed its own deadline of the first of April to do away with pit toilets in the province. About 1 900 schools in the province still use these dangerous pit toilets and over 2000 Limpopo schools need sanitation upgrades.

According to Breadline Africa, the sanitation challenges in Limpopo were mirrored in many other provinces.
