Discussion | Programme mired in controversy since inception

CAPE TOWN - South Africa's medical student exchange programme with Cuba has been criticised since its inception.

There have been reports of students not receiving their stipends, and of others being arrested on kidnapping and public disturbance charges of the latest group of medical students who returned from Cuba.

There have been reports that only 6 in a group of 21 have been accepted to complete their qualification at the University of Pretoria’s School of Medicine.

This after the Department of Defence sent the students to South America at a cost of 2.7-million Rand each.

Portfolio Committee on Defence chair Dakota Legoete spoke to eNCA.
