JOHANNESBURG - Government faces multiple challenges when it comes to education. Many public schools continue to battle inadequate infrastructure, lack of reliable energy and water supply.

While there is an acute shortage of classes overall, it's the reverse in most rural areas. Some schools were forced to close between 2012 and 2021 as enrollments declined.
