CAPE TOWN - It's a well-known assumption that South Africans love their sport. Now, analysis from research firm Eighty-20 has given greater insight into this.
It reckons around 25-million people in the country participate in sport. Soccer, rugby and cricket are the most popular codes. Interest in rugby among black South Africans has increased from 2014, perhaps because of Boks captain Siya Kolisi and transformation.
Overall, almost 11-million people watched the rugby world cup final.
Mixed Martial Arts, which many cite as the fastest growing sport, pales in comparison with about 250-thousand viewers, many of those participants are among the highest earners in South Africa.
