MAKHANDA, EASTERN CAPE - According to research, at least 50-percent of students at higher education institutions drop out in their first year. 

Professor Paul Maylam from Rhodes University believes that while access to higher education is critical, questions need to be asked about the viability of taking on a large numbers of students - many of who fail to complete their studies.

During a lecture last month, he highlighted insufficient funding as the major reason universities fail to fulfil their mandate.
