JOHANNESBURG - The General Industries Workers Union is calling for the reopening of abandoned mines.
It says this will solve the problem of unemployment.
The call comes as hundreds of miners remain underground in disused shafts in Sabie in Mpumalanga and Stilfontein in the North West.
Rescue operations are underway at Sabie while rescue operations are yet to commence in Stilfontein.
GIWUSA president Mametlwe Sebei unpacks this further.
