JOHANNESBURG - More than 16,000 kidnappings are recorded annually in South Africa. This is according to Statistics SA.

The stats also reveal that 85% of these are estimated to be women and children. Reasons for the kidnapping range from ransom to human trafficking, drugs, business debts and feuds.
