JOHANNESBURG - Is the National Prosecuting Authority, the NPA, finally succeeding in its fightback against the villains?
The answer is - it’s getting there.
They’re building evidence for cases, and they are getting on a lot of powerful people’s nerves, which is a very good sign, because powerful people are getting worried.
Former Speaker of the House, the ANC’s incredibly powerful Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula was arrested earlier this year, making her by far the highest-ranked government official to be detained.
That arrest really shocked South Africans.
The NPA is currently fighting with the department of justice.
The DoJ holds evidence from the Zondo Commission and a media report claimed that the NPA was being blocked from accessing the evidence database.
Batohi said that the NPA has been trying to access that evidence for nearly four years.
The justice department denied that they had been slowing down and blocking the NPA from doing its work, but a parliamentary committee heard that “technical glitches” may have prevented access.
Technical glitches? For nearly four years? Sounds suspicious to me. Very sus.
And this is a symptom of a problem with the way the NPA is set up.
Besides the fact that the president picks the NPA head, the NPA is also reliant on the justice department for funding and resources. And the justice department is also led by a political appointee.
