JOHANNESBURG - South Africans are confronting the country’s high crime rate.
Police Minister, Bheki Cele, presented the quarterly crime statistics covering the three months that ended in December.
Murders rose by 2.1-percent from the previous year to 7,700.
To put that into context more than 83 people are murdered a day in South Africa.
In some good news sexual assault and rape both fell by 1.7-percent.
However, when you look at crimes against women all categories of crime rose.
Murders rose. Attempted murders rose by 12-percent and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm rose by 7-percent.
The murder of children fell substantially but they are still being subjected to great harm.
Assaults with intent to do grievous bodily harm rose by 12-percent with children involved.
