JOHANNESBURG - The latest crime statistics reveal a troubling trend.
An average of 50 kidnappings occur daily in South Africa.
What's particularly concerning is that many of these cases involve ransom demands.
Over the past decade, kidnappings have surged by 183 percent, skyrocketing from about 3,832 in 2012/13 to over 10,800 in 2021/22.
This increase is closely linked to the significant spike in violent and organised crime in the country.
Lizette Lancaster from the Institute for Security Studies has more on this.
