JOHANNESBURG - It's snake season and the African snakebite institute is warning of a critical shortage of antivenom countrywide.
Around 4,000 South Africans are bitten by snakes every year, but only about 600 have access to treatment.
Anti-venom costs range from 15,000 for local snakes to R500, 000 for more exotic venom.
We discuss this further with African Snakebite Institute CEO Johan Marais.
