JOHANNESBURG - As the country heads towards what's been dubbed the most highly contested elections since 1994, opposition parties have taken the spotlight. 

According to Wits School of Governance professor, William Gumede, the role of opposition parties is critical in determining the level of accountability of governing parties and governments.
