2024 elections | Amnesty International calls on people to prioritise human rights

Amnesty International calling on party candidates to uphold their constituencies' human rights

JOHANNESBURG - Ahead of the 29 May polls on Wednesday, Amnesty International SA is calling on South Africans to prioritise human rights when casting their vote.

In support of this, the organisation has released its Human Rights Manifesto.

It highlights 10 crucial issues that political parties and candidates must commit to to uphold the rights of South Africans.

The manifesto has been sent to political parties and independent candidates, along with a request for them to sign a pledge to uphold these rights if elected.

So far, four political parties and one independent candidate have signed the pledge.

To date, nearly 10,000 citizens have taken this pledge, underscoring the critical role of the electorate in ensuring that human rights are prioritised in the upcoming elections.

Genevieve Quintal from Amnesty International South Africa discussed this with eNCA.
