JOHANNESBURG - Arrested illegal miners in Riverlea are demanding protection from the army.
They were taken into custody on Friday after deadly clashes last weekend.
The zama zamas say they have paid to work the mines.
More than 20 zama zamas have been arrested in Riverlea, south of Johannesburg, and police are on the ground according to Police Minister Bheki Cele.
There have been running battles in Riverlea, south of Johannesburg.
