VBS Saga | Matodzi's leaked affidavit only criminally binding on him - Expert

JOHANNESBURG - Convicted VBS fraudster Tshifiwa Matodzi's affidavit is only binding on him criminally.

The people mentioned in it may not face charges.

On Wednesday Matodzi pleaded guilty to multiple counts of racketeering, theft, fraud and money laundering.

He was sentenced to 15 years in jail by the High Court in Pretoria.

The NPA says it entered into a plea and sentence agreement with the disgraced former chartered accountant and chairperson of VBS, in terms of section 105A of the Criminal Procedure Act.

While that plea and sentence agreement remains confidential, Matodzi’s affidavit has leaked.

In the affidavit, he mentions senior politicians, prominent individuals and organisations he claims either participated in the corruption or unduly benefited from it.

All the  individuals and organisations have repeatedly denied any wrongdoing on their part.

The NPA has declined to confirm or deny if Matodzi has officially agreed to testify.

However,  it said the convicted fraudster has fully co-operated with the investigation and prosecution teams, and everything else will be ventilated in court.

The NPA says the VBS matter’s pre-trial hearing will begin on Monday in the High Court in Pretoria.
