JOHANNESBURG - Some 250 miners remain underground at the Gold One mine in Springs, and according to mine management, some of them may be injured.

At the same time, National Union of Mineworkers spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu says the situation is still tense and that there are over 400 mineworkers still underground.

Law enforcement has also said over 100 miners have made their way to the surface.

The mineworkers have been underground since Sunday, staging a sit-in for union recognition.

However, mine management says it's a hostage situation.

Workers are reportedly refusing to resurface until the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union is recognised.
