DURBAN - DA leader John Steenhuisen says the party remains committed to the Government of National Unity.
The relationship between his party and the ANC is at its lowest, after disagreements over the 2025 budget.
The DA decided to go against the tabled budget due to the proposed 0.5 percentage point VAT increase.
According to ANC Parliament Chief Whip, Mdumiseni Ntuli, the DA made demands that were beyond the scope of the budget.
Ntuli said the DA had demanded the closure of the National Youth Development Agency.
And they had called for the reduction of spending and asked for an extension of the duties of the Finance Deputy Minister, who is a DA Minister.
This led to the ANC approaching other parties, even those outside the GNU, to have the budget passed in parliament.
On Wednesday, members of Parliament voted in favour of the 2025 budget despite rejecting it. 194 MPs voted in favour, while 182 voted against.
Steenhuisen is in KZN campaigning for his party ahead of a by-election in Phoenix North of Durban.
