Sassa promises harsh punishment for corrupt employees

JOHANNESBURG - The South African Social Security Agency says its fraud department is investigating corruption at branches across the country.

11 Sassa employees are charged with cheating the grant system of more than R260 million in Johannesburg, while another has been arrested in the Eastern Cape for a separate case of fraud and corruption.

Officials say they are compiling a report to determine whether these arrests are part of a syndicate functioning within the agency.

Meanwhile, a Cape Town man has filed a case of identity theft after his information was used to obtain social grants in Johannesburg.
