SA’s water crisis | Gauteng loses 35% of water to leakages

JOHANNESBURG - Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu says Rand Water can't be blamed alone for problems in Gauteng.

He says 35 percent of water to the province is lost to leaks.

The minister says they are working to repair the leakages.

He was responding to a DA-led march over supply issues in the province.

The party has been calling for the sacking of the Rand Water CEO.

"I know the nature of problems that are happening here, but let me start with the main one, Gauteng municipalities lose on avearage 35 percent that they buy from Rand Water, only to leak it to the ground, lose it," Mchunu said.

"In other words, when that happens, we are in touch with them, we are on daily meetings with them to say, we need to repair, we need to build infrastructure, we need to bring down this kind of situation, the loss of water."
