DURBAN - South Africa's crime fighting institutions are in desperate need of fully functioning, forensic science labs.
The country is confronted by unacceptably high rates of murder and rape but convictions are low, with most cases thrown out of court for lack of evidence.

In 2021 the SAPS management promised parliament that the DNA backlog, at National Forensic Science Laboratories, would be resolved but cases now exceed 140,000.
