PRETORIA - South Africa has appealed to the International Court of Justice to halt Israel’s incursion into Rafah.
The first day of hearings at the ICJ were held on Thursday with Israel set to respond on Friday.
The initial filing argued that by killing Palestinians in Gaza and creating condition to cause serious mental and bodily harm and ultimately lead to their destruction, Israel is committing genocide against them.
The judges have not made any order regarding genocide.
But in an interim order they did tell Israel to ensure its troops commit no genocidal acts and ordered Israel to take action to improve the humanitarian situation.
In March the court issued further emergency measures and ordered Israel to ensure basic food supplies for Palestinians in Gaza.
