JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent comforting words to the families of the soldiers who died in the DRC.

He took a firm line, however, against the rebel M23 group and elements from the Rwanda Defence Force who attacked and killed the soldiers.

In a statement, Ramaphosa says the 13 South African soldiers were dedicated to peace.

He said that the government would provide all necessary support to the families of those killed or injured.

It is not yet known when the remains of the deceased would return although the process has begun.

Ramaphosa said South Africa deployed troops to the DRC as part of a United Nations effort for peace and one by SADC.

Kenya has tried to broker peace talks but the president of the DRC said he would not attend.

The situation in the Eastern DRC remains tense with the M23 controlling larger areas around Goma.

It has created a humanitarian crisis which has led to widespread looting.
