Retailers to implement egg rations due to avian flu

JOHANNESBURG - A number of major retailers across the country have already implemented, or are about to start rationing how many eggs customers can buy.

The avian flu outbreak has hit poultry and egg stocks hard, and with millions of birds being culled, egg production has dropped.
Retailer Woolworths has confirmed that customers will be restricted to just six eggs.

The Department of Agriculture says over a million chickens have been culled, since the flu outbreak, the worst to hit South Africa since the H5N8 bird flu in 2017.
The number of newly detected infections on the farms are increasing, and the industry is urging extra caution.
It’s calling on producers to report any indications of the disease, immediately.
