Ramaphosa warns of more wars if UN is not reformed

RIO DE JANEIRO - President Cyril Ramaphosa says the UN must be reformed or world peace will never be achieved.

Ramaphosa said this on 18 November when he delivered South Africa's statement at the G20 Leaders Summit.

He says it's important for the body to regain its status as centre of multilateralism.

The UN has been disregarded by powerful states ultimately watering down resolutions it makes, even in the Security Council.

Ramaphosa says to change this it must be transformed into a modernised, effective and action-oriented body.

He warns not doing this will undermine global peace and security.

The President also added that without reform, ending poverty and under-development, will remain a pipe dream.

Ending off his speech Ramaphosa said South Africa will help strengthen and reform the multilateral system to respond to global realities.
