JOHANNEBSURG - With tensions within the Government of National Unity high, President Cyril Ramaphosa has remained calm and focused on keeping the 10-party coalition united.
The Democratic Alliance opposes the VAT hike passed in Parliament, and is taking the matter to court. It remains to be seen whether the two GNU partners can find a way to move forward.
This has caused tensions with GNU partners, who say the DA can’t implement the Budget it is opposing.
The DA's highest decision-making body hasn’t decided on the future of its participation in the GNU.
"Whether we stay in the GNU or not, that is the matter for FEDEX to decide. We had an initial FEDEX over the course of Thursday and Friday but we have not made a decision one way or the other, the FEDEX will continue to meet and assess the current situation,” said DA leader, John Steenhuisen.
Ramaphosa is stressing the importance of keeping the interests of South Africans at the forefront.
