CAPE TOWN - The Department of Correctional Services has moved to allay fears around the spread of diphtheria at Pollsmoor prison.
An inmate has died and there are eight laboratory-confirmed cases among inmates, in the Medium A and B Sections but the department says it has taken proactive measures to prevent and control the spread of the infection.
Those affected have been isolated and prisons across the Western Cape have now been put on high alert and will follow processes put in place for the COVID-19 Pandemic.
