DURBAN - Overcrowding in South Africa's prisons continues to be a major challenge, and the situation is only getting worse.
Recently, a Pietermaritzburg Prison Head sent out a memo to magistrates and police station commanders advising them of severe overcrowding at the centre.
As such, the courts and SAPS were advised not to refer new admissions to it.
The memo has since been withdrawn after causing some embarrassment within the Correctional Services Department.
