Operation Shanela zooms in on zama zamas

JOHANNESBURG - Illegal mining in Gauteng is again on the police's radar, with Operation Shanela zoning in on the area west of Johannesburg.

Eleven illegal miners were arrested and lots of equipment seized.

But police concede they could do more.

The mining town of Carletonville has seen a spike in the illicit activity, with criminals also targeting active mines.
