PRETORIA - The rape case of seven-year-old Cwecwe seems to be far from being solved.

There are no witnesses or suspects and a medical examination, has found no foreign DNA on the little girl.

"DNA testing was done on the victim as per procedure and the outcome of those who were dealing with the matter was that no foreign DNA could be found on the victim," explained Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.

But police say there are three people of interest, who will provide DNA samples.

"We spoke about 3 people of interest that does not necessarily mean that those people are suspects, as we said the first IO they did investigation and they identified that there are people they could bring closer and the DNA of these 3 has been taken and it will be analyzed, so they are not suspects they are people of interest," National Police Commissioner, Fannie Masemola explained.

Police admit the rape case has not been handled properly. The NPA have declined to prosecute due to insufficient evidence.

The case has now been handed over to the Head of the Family Violence, Child Protection,
and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation.

The arrest of over 35-thousand GBV suspects in the last two years, shows the severity of the problem. In that period, 4-thousand-500 accused have been convicted and 660 sentenced to life in prison
