NDPP head says police must answer on AKA investigation

JOHANNESBURG - The police need to answer about the status of the AKA murder investigation.

That's the word from National Director of Public Prosecutions Shamila Batohi.

She was responding to the KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner saying a prosecution-led investigation is being conducted.

Batohi says while the NPA is working with police, they are ultimately the lead agency.

"I want to make on thing very clear, the prosecuting authority is not the investigating agency. So, to ask me how far we are from cracking this case is to be asking the wrong person," she said.

"You need to ask the police that question. Prosecution-guided investigations does not mean we investigate, we are meant to guide the police when there are gaps with certain investigations.

"But at the end of the day, the lead agency is the police, they are the investigative agency."
