KOMMETJIE - The names of 3 mariners who died in Kommetjie in the Western Cape, have been released. The deceased includes the first female in Africa, to navigate a submarine.
Lieutenant Commander Gillian Hector was part of the crew that was washed off a Navy vessel on Wednesday. Master Warrant Officer William Mathipa and Warrant Officer Mmokwapa Mojela were also killed.
An inquiry has since been launched into the training exercise. They were transferring to the SAS Manthatisi from a helicopter, when they were swept away by high waves.
The National Sea Rescue Institute assisted in recovery operations which was made difficult by rough seas.
