JOHANNESBURG - Former public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane could be forced to repay R2.1 million irregularly paid for her stay at a luxury Pretoria estate.
Acting Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka told Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development that the office is seeking clarity from National Treasury on whether Mkhwebane, should be held responsible for this.

"The former public protector was very well advised of the issue of the home that she was living in hence at some stage she had to move to a less costly place while we were still verifying with SAPS the circumstances under which she was living at that accommodation which was being paid for by the office," said Gcaleka.
President Cyril Ramaphosa fired Mkhwebane in September after 318 MPs voted in support of her impeachment.
Mkhwebane was found guilty of misconduct and incompetence by the Section 194 inquiry into her fitness to hold office.
