Minister Lamola defends remission decision

JOHANNESBURG - Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola has defended the decision to approve the remission of non-violent offenders.

Former president Jacob Zuma is one of thousands of offenders granted the special remission.

He was sentenced to 15 months in prison for contempt of court, after failing to appear before the Zondo Commission into State Capture.

He served just two months of the sentence before being released on medical parole.

In July, the Constitutional Court upheld an SCA ruling that his medical parole was unlawful.

Lamola says the decision was taken due to overcrowding at correctional facilities.
