JOHANNESBURG - A Metrobus passenger was shot dead in Fleurhof, Roodepoort on Wednesday morning.
An eyewitness said the victim was shot while trying to board the bus.
She said passengers thought it was a robbery and took cover.
Johannesburg Transport MMC Kenny Kunene said from what has been described, this was "a clear hit".
"The shooter got onto the bus at a bus stop before this one. The driver said as he was approaching this bus station he heard someone cocking a gun," Kunene said.
"He stopped the bus because he thought he was a target."
The bus driver said the woman tried to board and was shot at by the suspect.
He then got out of the bus and fired two more shots at the victim before fleeing in a vehicle.
