JOHANNESBURG - The Matric class of 2024 has made history
This comes as South Africa’s national pass rate for the 2024 NSC results increased from 82.9% in 2023 to 87.3%.
Department of Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube says this is the highest matric pass rate in the history of the country.
Gwarube released the results on Monday evening at the Mosaiek Church in Fairland, Johannesburg.
Hailing this significant achievement, the minister said the results should be a moment of great pride and celebration for all.
The class of 2024 entered Grade 8 in 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
During this time, there was a huge disruption to teaching and learning globally.
This condition would also go on to the next year as they progressed to Grade 9
Noting the odds this cohort had to beat, Gwarube said they were resilient.
Reflecting on the performances of the provinces, the Free State clings to the top spot with a 91.0% pass rate
In second place is KwaZulu Natal with a pass rate of 89.5%, marking an increase of 3.2% from 2023 and securing the third spot is Gauteng, which increased its pass rate from 85.4% in 2023 to 88.4% in 2024.
