JOHANNESBURG - It’s been 11 years since the Marikana Massacre.
Thirty-four people were killed when police opened fire on a crowd of striking mineworkers in the North West.
They had been on a wildcat strike demanding a wage increase at the Lonmin platinum mine.
Police were on edge after at least 10 officers, security guards and workers were killed in the days leading up to the tragedy.
The above report was filed at the time by the now late Ben Said.
