At least 12 confirmed dead in weather related incidents in Western Cape

CAPE TOWN - At least 12 people have been confirmed dead in weather related incidents in the Western Cape.

Three people were swept away and drowned in the Theewaterskloof Municipality while nine people were electrocuted in the City of Cape Town.

While Eskom has conveyed its condolences to the family of those who died as a result of illegal electricity connections, the power utility is appealing to people to report those involved in cable theft.
Stressing that illegal connections can be deadly.

Four friends aged between 7 and 12 from the Klipfontein Mission Station in Philippi East, were walking through a pool of water when they were electrocuted after apparently touching illegally connected electricity wires.

Their bodies were retrieved from the water by local residents.

In two separate incidents, four people were found dead in the Covid-19 informal settlement in Driftsands - an area where illegal connections are rife.
