DURBAN - Municipalities crippled by devastating floods in KwaZulu-Natal have been classified as disaster areas.
The Department of Cooperative Governance says this help municipalities to expedite the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure.
The classification will enable access to additional funding from provincial and national departments.
Key infrastructure like roads, schools, bridges, and houses were damaged as heavy thunderstorms battered the province.
Disaster teams are still working to determine the true extent of the damage.
The hardest hit Uthukela district, is believed to have suffered over R2-billion worth of damage.
