Koeberg Unit 1 given 20 year lifeline

JOHANNESBURG - The Koeberg nuclear power station’s unit 1 will continue to run until at least 2044.

That is the conclusion following discussions between Eskom and the National Nuclear regulator.

The 40-year operating licence was due to expire in July.

Eskom applied for a 20-year extension to operate as part of efforts to deal with the country’s crippling power shortages.

The regulator approved the application until 21 July 2044 subject to safety improvements.

The regulator is still assessing an application to extend the life of Unit 2 by another 20 years.
