DURBAN - KZN Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi denies his officers shoot first and ask questions later.
He says their main objective is to arrest suspects so they can appear in court.
But, sometimes they resist arrest which ends in shootouts.
This follows a gun battle on Tuesday in Inanda just north of Durban, which led to the deaths of 3 suspects.
Mkhwanazi says killing suspects takes a toll on crime-fighting efforts.

On the other hand murder and attempted murders are on the decline in KZN.
But, Mkhwanazi, is worried about an increase in assault cases.
He attributes this to alcohol abuse.
