Kidnapping for ransom on the rise in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG - Willem Els from the Institute for Security Studies says there has been a surge in cases of kidnapping for ransom. 

The number of kidnapping for ransom cases have gone up by more than 260 percent.

Just last week, the owner of Waltloo Butchery was kidnapped in Southgate, Johannesburg.

Since January 2023, at least 20 Portuguese butchery owners have been kidnapped along with their staff.
