Joburg mayor Kabelo Gwamanda resigns

JOHANNESBURG - Joburg mayor Kabelo Gwamanda has resigned.

He handed in his resignation letter to the speaker of council on Tuesday.

Gwamanda says he will continue serving as a councillor for his party Al Jamah-ah.

He was elected in May last year after his fellow party member Thapelo Amad’s resignation. 

But political parties and civil society wanted him gone as they felt he didn't address service delivery in the city. 

The resignation will become effective on a date set by the Speaker to align with the election of a new Mayor.
