JOHANNESBURG - Over 100 initiates have been rescued from illegal initiation schools in the North West.
At least two have died in schools not complying with the rules.
The provincial Cogta department says it's closed down 17 illegal schools.
The rescued initiates were taken to clinics and hospitals for check-ups.
This is part of the province's operation to clamp down on unlawful schools.
Police and officials have been inspecting facilities to ensure compliance and safety.
They are appealing to communities to help them by reporting illegal schools.
