Illegal mining sites raided

JOHANNESBURG - Illegal miners continue to operate despite intensified efforts to put an end to their activities.

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola and police top brass paid a visit to some identified illegal mining sites.

Over 4,000 zama zamas -- mostly foreign nationals -- have been arrested, while 329 people have been convicted for crimes related to illicit mining between April and August this year.

Over 3,000 soldiers have also been deployed to assist police in dealing with illegal mining.
