KRUGERSDORP - Krugersdorp residents are living in fear.
They're begging for more police visibility in the area following increased illegal mining activity.
It's more than a year since the infamous gang-rape case at a disused mine sent shockwaves through the community.
Eighteen suspects were taken into custody, but were released due to lack of evidence.
Fast forward to 2023, police are nowhere near solving the case.
Residents blame Police Minister Bheki Cele of failing to keep his promises.
"We cannot say we are safe because we still have open shafts that they are working on," said community activist Nicolene Trom.
"We don't have police visibility. We're a community still in fear."
