High-stakes summit on DRC crisis underway

JOHANNESBURG - The joint summit between the heads of state of the East African Community and SADC gets underway in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania today.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is also in attendance to discuss the security situation in the Eastern DRC.

On Friday, ministers of defence from the two regions held a Joint Meeting ahead of the today's summit.

In this high stakes meeting, Rwanda is looking to bring up a key issue around the SADC peacekeeping mission in the DRC.

While, the East African Community (EAC) is championing direct negotiations between the Congolese government and the M23 rebel group, a proposal that DRC president Felix Tshisekedi has so far refused to consider.
