Government of National Unity | DA, ANC haggle over demands behind closed doors

JOHANNESBURG - DA federal chairperson Helen Zille has outlined her party's demands in a letter sent to the ANC.

The party says it's committed to the GNU.

As part of their negotiations, the DA says any government they join must align with the Constitution and the principles outlined in their Statement of Intent.

Acknowledging the need for power to be shared in the government, they recognize the mandate of the ANC while emphasising the necessity for inclusivity that reflects the electoral outcomes.

But they have set out their demands for the distribution of cabinet posts, which stretches across all clusters.

In the ministries they run, Zille says they should also be allocated the deputy positions.

Their participation in the KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng legislatures will depend on the outcome at national level.

The ANC meanwhile, has lashed out at those making what it calls outrageous demands for specific cabinet positions.

The ANC says some are negotiating in bad faith by leaking demands to the media.

The party says the Government of National Unity can't be held to ransom by any single party.

This is seen as a direct response to the Democratic Alliance, which sent a list of demands to Secretary General, Fikile Mbalula.

These include that power be shared, and certain Ministries be given to the Democratic Alliance.
