Van Deventer was taken hostage by militants linked to Al- Qaeda in Libya six years ago.
The family says he's in good health.
They've thanked the Algerian and South African governments and NGO's including Gift of the Givers, for securing his release.
The Gift of the Givers managed to negotiate his release and he was left at the border between Mali and Algeria.
The family has asked for privacy during this time but says they will advise on details regarding an open media conference in the coming weeks.
