Gauteng Housing Committee calls for more consultation on Joburg fire victims' relocation

JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Housing Crisis Committee wants further consultations with city officials, on their attempts to rehouse the Marshalltown fire victims.

The city had planned to relocate the survivors to a vacant government plot in Swartkoppies, but residents in surrounding suburbs are vehemently opposed to the idea.

Gauteng Housing Crisis Committee Peter Monethe said, "The city has to find an alternative, however as Gauteng Housing Crises Committee we are also against the relocation of the victims to Swartkoppies because first of all, the officials must not make the same mistake again where they are taking decisions without consulting the victims and their leaders, especially in the inner city."

"Remember if you take people from inner city to Swartkoppies there are issues of school, issues of [getting] medication in certain clinics they don't consider those..."

"The mayor is also trying to do good but making a lot of mistakes [by] just taking decisions and imposing them to the people."
