Gauteng authorities concerned as road user disobey rules over festive season

JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Traffic Police Department says that some road users are not complying with safety regulations.

Drunken driving and speeding remain a major concern and the province has seen a spike in road fatalities since the start of the month.

With traffic volumes expected to peak, authorities are calling for caution.

Preliminary reports show that the first six days of December were a bloodbath on the country's roads with 193 people dying in crashes.

Authorities say jaywalking is a major contributor and driver behaviour remains a concern.

Authorities say law enforcement operations will intensify as traffic volumes are expected to soar ahead of Christmas.
